So freedom of the press is already suffocating under the weight of media concentration, the abandonment of the plan to merge TF1 and M6, unveiled on September 16 by Capital and The gallery, represents a victory for pluralism. But also for the Competition Authority, whose independence was threatened by the attempt to take control of Emmanuel Macron, favorable to the merger of the two television channels.

In a joint press releasepublished on September 16, Bouygues and RTL Group (owned by the German group Bertelsmann), respectively owner and majority shareholder of the two media groups, have announced that they are ending their merger project, launched in May 2021. This decision comes after the hearing , on September 5 and 6, of the parties by the members of the college of the Autorité de la concurrence and even before the final opinion of the college, scheduled for mid-October.

In question, one of the conditions set by the Authority for this merger: the sale of one of the channels, TF1 or M6, by the future juggernaut. Together, the two groups represented 75% of the French advertising market on television, and more than 40% of the national audience.
